Adobe CS3 Clean script (Windows)

There have been lots of problems installing CS3 (lots might be an understatement). These problems have been occurring on both Macs and PCs and have mostly affected those installing from the Suite, rather than installing an individual product. The main reason for this is that CS3 doesn’t properly uninstall past versions, especially trial or beta versions. Because of this, CS3 is unable to get itself installed.

The solution is the CS3 Clean Script. You shouldn’t have to run a cleanup script to get your product installed, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Adobe has a tech doc on this procedure but they fail to mention some hidden functionality in the CS3 Clean Script.

Steps to use the CS3Clean Script:

  1. Prep your system.
    1. Back up data, fonts and plug-ins. They very well may get erased. It’s not that common, but it happens.
    2. Remove anything CS3; Betas, trials, partial installations, etc.
  2. Download the CS3Clean Script For Windows
  3. Download and install the Windows Install Cleanup Utility (MSICUU2.exe)
  4. Unzip the download (WinCS3clean.zip)
  5. Open The WinCS3CleanFolder, double click on CS3Clean.exe
  6. Run the CS3Clean Script

    Adobe CS3 clean Script

    1. Type e (for English), press enter
    2. Type y (to agree to the EULA), press enter
    3. Type y (in order to continue on with the clean up), press enter
    4. Choose a Level to run the CS3Clean Script at, press enter
    5. Although not listed there are actually 4 levels of the CS3Clean Script. I recommend starting out with the lowest level and working your way up.
      CS3 Clean Script levels 1,2,3 and 4
    6. Did you install to any non-default locations? press y or n and then hit enter
    7. Do you want to see a preview? Select either y or n. Selecting y will allow you to preview the changes that will be made but will also force you to start over.
    8. Do you want to backup your registry? Select either y or n and then press Enter.
    9. Type ‘GO’ and press Enter. A bunch of stuff should scroll past. When it stops press Enter to exit.
  7. Reboot your computer
  8. Install

You may have to run the script multiple times per level. Before going up to level 3 I would try running the script at level 2, rebooting and then running it again at level 2.

I hope that helps.
