Document’s Trasparancy Blend Space Doesn’t Match Destination Color Space

When exporting a low-res (Smallest File Size) PDF from InDesign, you may get this warning dialog box:

transblendspace.png

The document’s transparency blend space doesn’t match the destination color space specified in the Export Adobe PDF settings. To avoid color appearance changes in the PDF, click Cancel and change either the document’s transparency blend space, or the destination color space. Or click OK to continue with the current settings.

This is just InDesign trying to be nice and warn you that some color weirdness might take place. This is happening because you probably have a placed file in your document that uses transparency. Likely an Illustrator file or a PDF. Here is the deal:

  • The PDF you are exporting wants to be in RGB.
  • The Indesign Document is set up in CMYK.

You can either just click past this dialog and hope everything will turn out fine (it often does). Or click Cancel and go back and change the blend space. It’s real simple, just go to Edit > Transparency Blend Space > Document RGB. If you just click though it, it may be a good idea to print a color proof and take a look at it before doing anything important with it. This is good general practice anyway =).

Remember that before you output the final high-res PDF for your printer to change that Transparency Blend Space back to CMYK.
