Don’t Think of InDesign as a Ferrari, Think of InDesign as a Swiss Army Knife

We recently had a reader write in with a question about an InDesign feature and ended by saying that he really didn’t want to switch to InDesign because it’s kind of like “going to the grocery store in a Ferrari”.

It was a pretty funny analogy, but I want to try to dispel that myth a little bit.

The job he was working on were 30-page “simple” booklets. If that was all I knew
about his task, I would already know InDesign is the right tool for the job. Since it’s clear he was going to need multiple pages in spreads, unique page sizes, and plenty of text, you are in the territory of one of the major page layout programs right there. And since InDesign is clearly the industry leader and largely is praised by designers worldwide, I’d say it’s the perfect choice.

You can think of InDesign a bit like a Swiss Army Knife. Sure, it’s got 37 tools like a wine bottle opener and a weird little poker thing you aren’t quite sure what is for, but it’s also got a decent blade on it. If that blade is all you need, you still have the right tool in your hand.
