InDesign CS2 Crashes When Exporting to PDF

One of the biggest problems people have with CS2 is that it’s not fully compatible with the Intel Macs. It’s not really Adobe’s fault as the Intel Macs were released after CS2 and the Intel Macs don’t actually meet the system requirements for CS2.  CS2 is actually running through emulation Software called Rosetta and Rosetta is a finicky one indeed.

For the most part InDesign runs fine on the Intel Macs. The biggest problem is that InDesign tends to crash when exporting large PDFs, especially PDFs with placed EPS graphics. It will either crash with no error or give you an Out of Memory error and then crash. The easiest way to fix this problem is to buy CS3 but it’s not the only way.

Solutions:

1. Convert your EPS files to a different format

2. Close all other Rosetta applications before exporting to pdf (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.)

3. Change the Color Conversion setting to “Convert to Destination (Preserve Numbers)”  This is located in the Export Adobe PDF Window under Output.

4. Change your display performance to Typical from High Quality.  View>Display Performance>Typical Display

Solutions if you have Adobe Acrobat:

1. Print to PDF.  Simply print as normal but Select Adobe PDF as your printer.  This will result in a flattened PDF but at least it won’t crash.

2. Export your pdf in chunks and then piece it back together into a full document using Adobe Acrobat.

That’s pretty much it.  If it still doesn’t work you’ll either need to downgrade your machine or upgrade your software.
