InDesign CS3 Leopard Compatibility
The long awaited Mac OS 10.5 operating system is finally out and by most accounts it’s rocking. This, alas, is not a rave of Leopard, but a list of bugs found when Apple OS X interacts with InDesign 5 (CS3). The good news is that it appears to work and Adobe has even stated that the two are compatible (this will download a pdf). Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign are supposed to be ready to go, and for the most part that appears to be true.
Just as Acrobat 8.0* didn’t fully function with Vista or office 2007 and InDesign CS2 often crashes on exporting PDFs using an Intel Mac there are bound to be some hiccups. Below I’ve listed the known problems with Indesign CS3 and leopard. If I missed something let me know and I’ll add it to the list. While you’re at it, you may want to let the good people at Adobe know so they can fix it up asap. You can submit a bug report by clicking here.
InDesign 5/Leopard Compatibility Issues:
Hide InDesign, does not work. This doesn’t seem to be happening to everyone, but to a significant number of users. Preliminary reports suggest this can be solved by reseting preferences.
Pretty short list, eh? Very true, but I’m betting that a few more problems will pop up after more people finish installing. That being said, it looks like it’s pretty safe to install Leopard.
*Acrobat’s pdfmaker doesn’t seem to be working with Leopard. While this isn’t an InDesign problem it can be a hassle for those who commonly print to their pdf printer.
I hope this helps in making the decision to switch over to awesome 10.5, happy InDesigning.
Just like the resume template sites boast of having a cv template for every imaginable job, the web template guide has a template for every subject. Like the way powerpoint templates can be adapted easily, you don’t need to have a web design degree on experience in web development courses to work your way around a website template. It can be a flash templates or a css one.

Hey!
I have trouble opening indesign cs3. Message: “Adobe Indesign is shutting down. A serious error was detected. Please restart indesign.” So it means I cant open it. Do you know what do do?

I think you are misinformed. Many people have numerous issues.

Hey Guys,
From the article: “We have yet to hear about a problem with InDesign CS3 on Leopard from users who can confirm they’ve done a clean reformat and install with Leopard.”
It seems to be all about the clean install. That’s what I did personally and haven’t had any trouble at all. If anyone is still having problems with InDesign CS3 and Mac OS X Leopard (10.5), please contact us and let us know. We’d love to try and help!

I’m running InDesign CS3 5.0.1 and Leopard 10.5 and have not had anything of the prior mentioned problems; (installation or serious error), but my recently the tabs dialog box no longer comes up when I select it via menu or shortcut command. I believe it occurred after an update. As well, the find/replace is not working right in the dialog box, either.

ID CS3 crashes (shuts down) regularly. Everytime I try to package or make a PDF it crashes too. Sometimes placing an image (apple-D) crashes ID5.01 too. In the most part under leopard ID CS3 is unusable for me on my G5 powermac. However on my Intel MacBook Pro all is well. I installed both as a clean install. Using Tiger it was great!
November 12th, 2007 at 7:27 pm
I am exhibiting a similar problem with that of Nick. InDesign shuts down after I attempt to export a PDF. I can only hope that it will not shut down whilst I’m exporting an entire book to PDF.
November 13th, 2007 at 3:34 pm
Today I have made many pdf’s and for the first time it has not crashed! The things I have done is repaired the permissions and deleted all cache files in the user directory and in the system folder and also the library folder, then deleted the IDCS3 preferences file in the user directory. Secure empty trash and a restart. I hope it is good tomorrow!
November 14th, 2007 at 11:18 am
My user is experiencing problem when she uses the re-link or link picture function on InDesign CS3 with Mac OS x. I downloaded and installed the latest update patch for Indesign, but problem still came up.

For everyones info… as soon I posted the above, typically my copy of IDCS3 crashed. In desperation I tried this… when I open a indd file I used to just double click the icon to open. This by default opens in ‘normal’ mode. Instead I whent to ‘file’ ‘open’ and selected ‘open original’ instead. Whenever I do this packaging works as does making pdfs. At first I thought IDCS£ had magically started to work normally, when I reverted to ‘double clicking’ my problems started again. So long as I stick to ‘open original’ all seems fine.
November 14th, 2007 at 11:44 pm
When I open InDesign CS3 I get the message “Adobe Indesign is shutting down. A serious error was detected. Please restart indesign.” Per the post above.
Not even my CS2 will open but I’m aware of this (although it worked 2 days ago perfectly ok but not today…??). Thought Leopard would be ok…naivety is no excuse!
Any fixes appreciated! Will continue searching though…
November 16th, 2007 at 6:58 pm
I have had the exact same problem as Nick, ID crashes on my G5 when exporting PDF. Basically anything that I do that requires going to the finder dialog causes a crash. Everything is fine on my Intel Mac using the same files.
I found a temporary fix, and I’m not sure why it works. But each time I do this InDesign quites crashing.
Open ID and create a new blank document, save to desktop, then export a PDF of the blank file. Keep the blank document open. Then open the file you want to work with and export the PDF. Not sure why this works, but it has worked for me each time I have had this problem, and I have tried all kinds of other fixes. Let m eknow if this works for you as well. Thanks.
November 19th, 2007 at 5:00 pm
on mbp id3 stop working saying “id is shutting down serious error” i uninstall it then re instal and it worked, on my macpro i cant uninstall the uninstaller (design premium) ask for password and then quits. how can i manually uninstall, is there a diferent setup that will work on leopard?
November 20th, 2007 at 1:34 pm
CS3 intermittently crashes when I export .pdf, package or use the anything that has to hit the finder. I also noticed that the use Adobe dialog had also disappeared from my save/place window.
November 20th, 2007 at 5:28 pm
The Hide function was the first of my issues — it simply didn’t work. After monkeying around with it for a few, I went ahead and shut down Suitcase, thinking this was a font related issue. No go, the fun was just beginning. Went back to InDesign, clicked on the startup window and poof, it disappeared. Now I can’t even get ID to come back. Finder says it’s still open, but I can’t see it. I have nothing open except ID and it still isn’t working. Come on already! This appears to be a fairly common problem, but no solution as of yet. Anyone figure it out?
November 21st, 2007 at 9:38 pm
I have the same problem as mike. I have trouble switching back to InDesign regularly. Click on InDesign in the dock and nothing happens. No menu, no palettes, nothing. I have to force quit and reopen it. I have a feeling this is related to the hide issue somehow but it is very annoying.
November 25th, 2007 at 5:48 pm
I’m using ID 5.0.1 with Leopard 10.5.1. Every time in click open file ID crashes. Clicking on an ID file and the file opens fine. I have repaired permissions - done everything - even reinstall. This has got to be fixed
November 27th, 2007 at 4:34 pm
I can’t even open CS3 on my MacPro with Leopard. It opened when I first installed it, but now it just won’t open no matter how many times I restart the computer, and no matter where I try to open it from. I’m afraid I’ll have to reinstall unless someone has had a similar problem and knows an easier way to fix the problem.
November 28th, 2007 at 1:08 am
Same problem as Regina. ID worked, with frequent crashes, but then would not start-up at all. I opened Activity Monitor and saw an ID process running. Once I quit this process I was able to start ID.
November 29th, 2007 at 6:21 am
I tried Richard’s temporary fix (November 16) and had the same success he had. Strangest thing.
November 30th, 2007 at 4:08 am
I tried Richard’s fix, and it worked for me too. Thanks a lot, Richard. I’ve never been able to print directly from InDesign to my HP LaserJet 6MP. Without the ability to create PDFs, I can’t even print a proof.
December 4th, 2007 at 1:11 am
i’m running leopard and IDCS3 and ID crashes when importing graphics. it’s doing my head in

Aaagggh - I’m having the same problems as Mike + Gary and it’s driving me nuts… Force-Quit is all I seem to be able to do - playing hide and seek with a DEADline looming ain’t my idea of fun… anyone figure this one out?????
December 5th, 2007 at 11:49 am
Hey guys!
Enything new about Leopard’s Indesign SC3 Hide option s**t?
As many people I have the same annoying problem.
Looking forward to solve it!

December 5th, 2007 at 2:41 pm
Doesn’t look like there is a cure-all solution to the InDesign CS3 on Leopard Hiding issue just yet. It’s definitely Leopard related, not CS3 related. The best solution is just to minimize your windows right now instead of hiding the whole application. Not exactly a fix, I know, but it’s better than crashing and/or not being able to get back to ID.
December 10th, 2007 at 11:33 am
My IDCS3 started to work OK under OSX10.5.1 after having LOADS of trouble with it crashing mainly when packaging or making PDFs.
I had to reinstall my system to to major permissions problems. Now IDCS3 wont work at all! Total pain in the neck… Adobe you have to fix this it is pathetic.
December 17th, 2007 at 7:03 pm
Aiuto!
I have installed Mac OS X Leopard (10.5), AI and PSD are running ok but InDesign CS3 is no longer opening, it immediately shuts down saying that a serious error was detected…
what can I do?
thanks

Indesign crashes on “place image” … open + save…
G5 PPC , Tiger 10.4.11 !!!
latest updates etc, latest quicktime.
(The Prefs and Cache Deleting do not work for me!)
What the heck !??!?!????!?!????
December 28th, 2007 at 8:15 am
The problem with “Adobe Indesign is shutting down. A serious error was detected. Please restart indesign.” is something to do with the recently opened document list. I have encountered this, not only on Mac, but on the PC/Vista.
On the PC, it is a lot of p&&&ing around in the registry to reset this list, but on Mac, just go and get a copy of ONYX and rebuild the cache database with this. That is what I did, and it works ok for me!
December 31st, 2007 at 8:30 pm
Can’t get screen to stop moving up and down and side to side.
January 2nd, 2008 at 10:51 am
Sean, thanks for the info, ONYX works fine for me and has sorted a couple of other issues I had! Everyone get ONYX CS3 runs a dream again after using this to clean my system!
January 2nd, 2008 at 4:10 pm
Oh god… CS3(ID) has bottomed out again. ONYX helped for half a day now even that wont work. It seems anything that does help only does so for so long then ID CS3 reverts to the same BAD behaviour. I am mystified why Adobe don’t sort this out?
January 3rd, 2008 at 8:28 pm
Thanks Richard! You saved me. I had the same crash on relinking, exporting save as etc. PPC G4 power book running the updated indesign cs3 and 10.5.1.
January 7th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
Here’s a workaround that works very well for me (PPC 10.5.1, CS3).
Each day (or when you have to restart your mac) open ID3 (no artwork at this stage). When open go to ‘File -Open’, navigate to your file in the finder (DO NOT double click the file you want open) in the dialogue box select ‘Open Original’ and click ‘Open’. When I PDF it is fine, as is placing graphics (drag-drop and Apple-D) and also packaging. Diong this means I have not seen the ‘Shut down message either. I only have to do this once too, after that I can double click files if II want!
January 8th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
Nick, thank you so very much. I have been pulling my hair out here at work. I have had to resort to asking another designer to replace pictures and PDF projects for me. Your work around seems to be the answer for now!
Cheers!
January 9th, 2008 at 6:04 am
With regard to everybodys hide indesign comment. I never use this feature.
I always simply press apple-tab to jump to other open programs…..or to the desktop i use F11.
hope this helps.
January 9th, 2008 at 10:11 am
Andrew, glad it is working for you too! Fingers crossed!
January 19th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
I cannot print directly with InDesign unless I save the project as an eps file, then it prints. Otherwise if I select print nothing happens. So far, no other problems with leopoard. It does seem a little slower than Tiger and I have 2g of ram.

Onyx (1.9.3) has been the only solution that has worked for me (Leopard 10.5.2 - G5 PPC dual 2GHZ). After wasting a day searching online forums and removing INDCS3 software and reinstalling - I realised it was very similar to a problem that I previously had with Quark 7 with the OpenType font cache, (fixed using OpenType Font Cache Cleaner at the time - this problem has now been fixed by installing Leopard) which would result in numerous crashes - even more then the normal Quark.
All previous version of IND were as solid as a rock on my system, but with Leopard INDCS3 was crashing on opening, saving, exporting, relinking images etc. basically the software could not be used (No problems at all on my Intel Macbook - only on PPC machine).
In the Cleaning section of Onyx I selected ‘Fonts’ and checked the boxes ‘System and Users’ and ‘Adobe Systems’ - clicked on the execute button and restarted. InDesign CS3 now works completely……hopefully this info may help someone else.
I have kept the original installation of InDesign CS3 (5.0) and not upgraded to 5.2 just incase it breaks again……Now I have to find a solution for the Photoshop CS3 bug that means my Xerox Phaser printer prints gobbledygook. Very disappointed in the Mac OS X (10.5….) and Adobe software this time.
PS - I removed Version Cue software as some forums recommend.
February 26th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Paul did you execute any other options in Onyx, I executed the Font option but it still gives me the error message when I try to start up INDCS3
February 27th, 2008 at 10:58 pm
Chris, I did the following before my application came back to life. (After doing the trashing of preferences which forums mention).
First I ran a verify disk permissions and then a repair disk permissions in Mac OS X utilities. Then out of necessity or desperation just on the off chance I ran MacJanitor which is still on my system (Although the software hasn’t been updated for some time - it did previously resolve an issue I had on a PPC G4 Mac Mini).
I then updated Onyx to 1.9.3 - in Onyx I ran another permissions repair in the Maintenance section. I may have also checked all the boxes in the Scripts tab and hit the execute button. Then in the cleaning section > System ‘Delete the Cache’, checked the ‘CUPS files’ box just incase > Execute. Next I did the Fonts cleaning, ‘Systems and Users’ and checked the ‘Adobe Systems’ box > Execute - once finished it asked if I wanted to restart. With fingers crossed I restarted - launched INDCS3 and files have opened, collected, relinked images, exported since.
Hope the above info helps…..
INDCS3 did crash once yesterday - but re-launched without a problem and everything still works. INDCS3 has never crash on my Intel Macbook (used everyday)…..Photoshop CS3 however sends the fans in the machine into overdrive.
March 5th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
I just installed CS3 and was playing around with it. I found that the apple H command hides CS3. I used it a lot in CS2 to hide frame edges. I hope this helps.
March 12th, 2008 at 3:50 am
None of what you all suggested works for IDCS3 as I have tried it all with the powerpc G4 and macosx.5.2 - the pdf function is bugged as well as the relinking and any other suggestions to fix these 2 main functions I rely on?
March 14th, 2008 at 11:32 am
I have experienced all of the problems with IND and Leopard as described by readers of this and other forums.
I found the following temporary fix on Tim Cole’s forum (I think). Go to your Library folder (at the user level)—>Caches—>Adobe InDesign—>Version 5.0. Then I ditch everything in that last folder except the Scripting Support folder. This has helped when the problem gets so bad I can’t even launch IND. But of course, all of the problems return as others testify. So this is only temporary. Also be aware in doing this you are getting rid of recovery data which I believe is what is cached when you have an unexpected quit and enables you to pick up in a document where you had left off. So you will have lost everything in any given file up to your last save. Maybe this will help somebody. Let’s just keep storming Apple and Adobe with our complaints and “reports” until this situation is resolved.
April 4th, 2008 at 1:10 am
I had a nice imac running 10.4 and cs2, and now I have a f**ken dog running 10.5 and cs3! How can adobe release such bad software in this day and age. I’m so pi**ed off I upgraded, cs4 better be good and it better be free to all users who have had to put up with cs3.
April 4th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Hi
It seems that cleaning user caches (with cocktail or main menu) helps hiding problem // well you still have to clean caches every time before launching the application
April 24th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Per the hide InDesign bug and Dion’s example of apple-tabbing, I run into instances where I either hide InDesign or tab to another application, but cannot get back to IND. It remains hidden somewhere in the background and I have to force quit. I’m running 10.5.2 on a intel mac book, CS3 up to date.
April 24th, 2008 at 11:40 pm
Ha!!!!
I found out what’s the problem to this whole Command+H “Hide InDesign” issue in OS X 10.5 Leopard.
Apparently the default keyboard preferences are conflicting with the optional [Shortcut for QuarkXPress 4.0] preferences available in the Keyboard Shortcuts menu.
Here’s what you do: Go to Edit>Keyboard Preferences. In the Set: drop-down menu where it says [Default], select [Shortcut for QuarkXPress 4.0].
Keep the Product Area: Application Menu as is.
in Commands: it shows the various shortcuts. Highlight “Hide InDesign”
Notice when you do that, in the current Shortcuts: window it shows
Default: Ctrl+Cmd+H.
Fine, leave it like that. Leave the Set: selected at as [Shortcuts for QuarkXPress 4.0]. Click OK and the window will close.
Now with with your InDesign document open, press Ctrl+Cmd+H (Control+Apple+H). Voila, it hides InDesign! To make InDesign visible to the front again, press cmd+tab on the desktop and click back on the InDesign icon tab. Boom, there ya’ go! I’m not sure yet what the shortcut key is to return InDesign, but at least this works.
What’s weird is that by initially “teaching it” by pressing Ctrl+Cmd+H, it debugs that Ctrl+H problem that loses the application. After doing this, you can return the keyboard preferences back to Default (not QuarkXPress 4.0) and go back to pressing just Ctrl+H and it works! No need to to continue pressing Command with Ctrl+H.
I’ll send this info’ to Adobe and Apple. A minor conflict, but still it was frustrating for our department as well.
May 6th, 2008 at 9:45 am
Hey, this seems to work! Let’s see how ID behaves after it has been used for a day. If iding still works this is a (at least a temporary) solution. Thanks!
May 9th, 2008 at 9:26 am
Hi
Well I tried that as well but it’s not working for me. Unfortunatly. Thanks for sharing …
May 16th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
I have major problems with CS3 InDesign on MacOS 10.5.2. The Find/Change and Paragraph palettes don’t work properly. What I type in to them usually vanishes; if try again, I find what I type appears on the page, not in the palette. Do I need a patch?
May 21st, 2008 at 4:00 am
I have had nothing but trouble with Indesign
On clean, legal systems
Severe crashes, retrograde corrupt backups
So even making backups will not save your artwork
Adobe makes toy-software
Absolutely useless when you do professional work
May 27th, 2008 at 6:19 am
Like many, I’m a professional and a student who uses Indesign and the whole CS3 package. Every week it’s something new. Then Adobe sends out these updates that cannot be downloaded (I always get an error message, then it says download was complete… hmmmm). Leopard and CS3 do not play well and we are left to deal with it. Why are we putting up with this? Then again it isn’t like we can drop the software and find an alternative. I know for sure that I will never go out my way to purchase an Apple or Adobe product again. It’s just not worth it anymore.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
I haven’t had this much grief with desktop publishing software since the release of QuarkxPress v.1. Whatever happened to the old programmers they used to have in the glory days of DTP? Maybe they should just turf ID and bring back PageMaker?
June 2nd, 2008 at 8:14 pm
Same issue. Found that if you open a new document and leave it open in the background clears up the problem for awhile. I’ve found no permanent solution, and sometimes have as many as 10 new docs open at once. I also have a problem with InDesign NOT staying in the background, when I select other applications they come forward breifly, but InDesign always pops back to the front.
June 2nd, 2008 at 8:15 pm
Sorry—same issues as Duncan.
June 4th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
I have had nothing but problems with Indesign CS3… to be honest I really hate it and my hatred grows more intense everyday I use it…. If any one knows how to remedy this I would be forever grateful. I am close to going back to the good ol’ CS2 version… but I have already started so many projects in CS3 that I fear Ive passed the point of no return.
June 6th, 2008 at 8:33 am
I’ve been having major problems, like so many others it seems, with ID (CS3) on Leopard (10.5.3 on an iMac G5 PPC) crashing when I try to either ‘Relink’ or re-place an image. Sometimes a ’serious error’ message comes up and I have to restart to get ID to even reload again. Also the ‘Export’ function often causes a crash. Have done the Disk Utilities and reinstalled Indesign, to no effect. I am very reluctant to go down the create new account path or dumping libraries, ‘cos I’m just not tecky enough to fix it if it goes wrong.
HELP!!
PS and AI seem stable though. The only fix that’s worked for me is to cut and paste everything from the crashing file into a new one and save it as something else, but as I use ID (legally) for college and work, this is time-consuming and frustrating. Oh, and I’ve already reinstalled my OS 4 times….
June 13th, 2008 at 3:01 am
We have been having problems with apple like this for nearly fifteen years, remember OS7? Remember the change from Motorola to power PC? remember the first two versions of OS 10? Now we have change from power PC to Intel and we have to put up with OS 10.5 “DINGO” or is that leopard! This is Bull**it from apple and they should know better, personally I have been using Vista home premium on my laptop at home and it kicks arse compared to leopard.
June 13th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Your comments aren’t helpful at all Glenn - sounds like you want to start a Mac ‘v’ PC row (yawn… I don’t) And sorry, I’m not old enough to remember OS7
Anyway, a *helpful* support guy from Apple (yes, they do exist..) suggested I rename my InDesign Prefs in my Library with .old and my Saved Data in my Caches with .old as well. This stops the crashes - but only until you start customizing the prefs again. At least it’s better than nothing until they sort out the bugs in the OS (or is it in CS3..? There’s a blame game going on here and although I don’t really care who is to blame, I do want a permanent fix please).
June 15th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
Hello EvilVee, I made my comments because I get so angry about apple letting this happen. Serious apple users have had these problems before in the 80’s and 90’s and they should not be occurring now. I work in the printing industry and cannot just clean install 10.5 and CS3 and get up and running in a couple of hours! This is a major problem and I have a imac sitting here that is basically unusable for work purposes. I am not wanting to start a mac v pc war but after the ragging vista has had I was surprised to see how good it was, I own far more mac’s than I do pc’s so I am no big fan of microsoft but I have to admit that I like vista home premium very much compared to OS 10.5.
June 17th, 2008 at 12:32 am
Hi
I have had the same trouble with hide indesign, but also with printing, i have a colour laser and at first everything was fine but now indesign will not print anything landscape - everything comes out on portrait no matter the settings, today i can’t open any indesign files or indesign itself! I have uninstalled, reinstalled, restarted, etc etc… I have so much down time trying to sort problems…HELP!
June 27th, 2008 at 12:14 am
we are having trouble with a new machine running 10.5 and cs3 accepting the valid serial number. any ideas??
July 8th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
In-design crashes everytime I try to re-link an image (and from the comments above I would assume this happens on placing an image also).
I have also had crashes when placing images in illustrator and doing “file save-as” in both illustrator and photoshop.
I read something about disabling adobe version cue or what ever it is called, this helped my photoshop issues and most of the illustrator issues, but it hasn’t helped in-design.
Please help.
I am on a 1.25 GHZ PowerPC G4 with Lepoard
