InDesign CS3 Spell Checker Not Working

Adobe InDesign CS3 has a built in spell checker that checks your document against a built in dictionary. This is a great feature as it not only allows spell checking of the standard dictionary but lets you to add customized words to said dictionary or to use a legal or medical dictionary. It also supports many languages which can be a big plus if you’re working in a document that’s not English. This multi-language feature can cause problems however if your placed text doesn’t have a language associated with it.

If the check spelling feature isn’t finding your misspelled words when you have it search placed text the most likely cause is that the spell checker doesn’t know what language it is supposed to be searching for. Luckily, this is easy fixed.

Solution:

1. Select your text box with the text tool

2. Bring up the Character Panel. Windows > Types & Tables > Characters

Character Panel

3. If the Language is set to [No Language] then change it to the appropriate language, I use English: USA
