InDesign Freezes at startup: Initializing the SING gaiji system (Mac)
The Sing Gaiji system is involved in Asian characters and fonts. It allows for additional glyphs that aren’t primary to a font set. For a better explanation of what the Sing Gaiji system is refer to the article on it at Adobe.com.
If InDesign freezes at startup and what is displayed on the screen is; Initializing SING Gaiji system then follow the steps below to resolve the issue.
Solution:
- Delete the Sing Gaiji folder. If you don’t use any Asian fonts and want to resolve this quickly then this is the solution for you.HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe select the SING folder and delete it.
You will now be able to launch InDesign. I recommend this solution for a quick fix and suggest you further troubleshoot later when you have more time in case you find yourself using Asian fonts in the future.
- Set proper permissions to the SING folder. Everyone will need Read/Write access in order to resolve this issue.
- Navigate to the sing folder at HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe and select the SING folder.
- get info (apple + I)
- Expand the ownership and permissions section
- Make sure Read and Write access is given to; owner, group and others.
- click apply
- start InDesign

Hm… I have deleted the SING folder. Reboot. Restart InDesign : it just makes a new SING folder in the application data/adobe folder… What then??
I’ve reinstalled all my cs3 programs. I had the same startup problem with InDesign before - but last time it helped to delete the Sing folder - but not this time…???

Try deleting singmeta.dat at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\SING\Datastore
If that doesn’t work I should be doing a XP version of this article in the next couple of days.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Deleting the SING folder worked like a charm. I work in a graphics college and it is up to me to make sure the software is installed and updated/working properly and this had me in pain all week. You just saved my sanity, thanks again!

I tried to use FINDER to delete the SING folder–it was not there. I finally learned that Mac hides certain files and folders. By going to the Terminal Utility, I was able to rename the SING folder and the crashing of Indesign stopped.
The commands you would use in the terminal:
cd /Library/Application\ Support/Adobe
mv SING SING-RENAME
Renaming the SING folder works the same as deleting it, but you can later reverse it if you want to fix it a better way.
You can use the TAB key to facilitate entering the path in the cd command.
